Spin Magazine’s Review of The Cave Singers
Hope burns bright on this Seattle-based trio’s enticing second album. Mumbly, scratchy-voiced Pete Quirk is more self-assured than on 2007’s Invitation Songs, championing optimism and determination in the face of trouble, powered by sharp folk and country-blues guitars, plus no-frills percussion. On the swaggering “In the Cut,” he proclaims, “I swear to be brave,” and rejects the “old sad dream” of death in the shimmering “Hen of the Woods.” Amid images of oceans and soaring birds, Quirk’s account of lawn dancing on “VV” is poignantly uplifting.

Does the first band go on at 10pm?
03.11.10 on 12:07 PMim tired of giving my first born to get into shows at the brass rail. i used to love coming here. the bands never start on time. by the time im ready to go home i havnt seen 2 of the 3 bands i paid to see. bull shit.
03.26.10 on 2:13 PMSorry you feel that way anon. Personally I appreciate seeing national acts come through our city again, and yes the ticket prices are higher to see them. But if you’re a Cave Singers fan and you get to see them in your town for $10 instead of driving to Chicago where you’ll pay $12 I don’t see the problem. As for start times, you are correct, we do need to start week day shows earlier and we’re trying, it really comes down to when people show up. The bands want to play for people and unfortunately most people don’t show up until 11PM, but we’ll focus on doing better on start times in the future. As for tonight Lee Miles should be on stage by 10:30 and Cave Singers around Midnight.
Also, anon, if you looking for affordable entertainment earlier, try Randal P Jones open mic night this Wednesday at 4PM with a .50 cent cover.
03.26.10 on 2:55 PM
