Their first full length album In Deference to a Broken Back, an expansive and collaborative effort, was released through Amble Down Records. Their sophomore album, 2012‘s The Nature of Things, is a result of asking what can be created by three men at ease with their instruments; storytellers at heart.Where In Deference enlisted the help of a large group of friends and fellow musicians, The Nature of Things scales back. Recorded by Patrick Stolley, founding engineer for the celebrated music blog Daytrotter, the album reflects simplicity.“With The Nature Of Things, we made an intentional effort to focus and tighten the writing. To try to confine the arrangements to elements that the three of us could perform,” says Jon.
Their classical voice training and pleasing, sometimes unexpected harmonies are evident throughout the album in pieces such as “Church” and “Ames, IA,” where we we are allowed to glimpse, in eavesdropped conversations—a couple divorcing, a meth addict begging for freedom and church bells tolling for no other reason but that the dead rest below. Like the Wanderer who returns home only to find what’s already “written on the spine of every holy lowly man, woman, creature, and child,” the experience of seeing something in its stripped away form is “a love letter in kind” (“Andrew the Wanderer”), a gift to those who “keep hobbled hopes under lock and key” (“We Fold Inside of Us”). “The world is full of many things to be loved and despised, but also simply seen,” says Jason. “What is the nature of things? You’re looking at it, however it may be, right now.” Check out a review of their show last winter here: http://facebook.com/ /// Chrash “Chrash is a band formed after the conclusion of Iowa rockers Tripmaster Monkey. With Chris Bernat on guitar/vocals, Paul Blomquist on drums and Kim Murray on bass, Chrash has been making quirky pop and touring parts of the Midwest and parts of the east coast for almost 6 years. The group has 3 full-length albums and 2 E.P.s. Chrash has described their sound as a cross between Gabriel era Genesis and Roger Miller. It is not certain if that is what they achieve, but the territory in between provides a great playground for the head. Accessible and catchy with a noticeable progression from previous recording, Chrash entices the listener to want more.” www.facebook.com/pages/ /// Fair Fjola “From nowhere U.S.A. comes a band of four Argentine-American half- breeds, combined with the talents of two fine gentlemen (and the guidance of producer Brian Deck). Fair Fjola achieves a unique grass roots sound. Based out of Northern Indiana, Fair Fjola creates a unique blend of vintage Americana flavored heavily with indie-pop sensibilities and classic rock swagger. Truly nostalgic and entirely Midwestern, Fair Fjola has a sound all their own created from an intricate and varied use of acoustic and electric guitars, piano, synths, harmonica, ukulele, bass and drums. Lead by front man Sebastian Coria (rhythm guitar) and accompanied by sisters Eileen (piano) and Veronica (ukulele/synth), Fair Fjola’s harmonies achieve a sound best described as incendiary. Drummer Sam Gillis, along with Lead guitarist Tyler Reinholt and bass player Samuel Coria, work together to provide the listener with original melodic bliss.” For those in Fort Wayne, you might recognize this band as the 2012 Battle of the Bands Champs – and I’m incredibly excited to have them join this special night of music to add some sensational folk-rock sounds to an already-stacked lineup. http://www.facebook.com/ |
